Mazda is moving to new platforms and engines for its latest SUVs, and the automaker just teased the upcoming CX-90 three-row.
Mazda hasn’t shared full-body images of the new SUV, but spy photographers have captured the vehicle testing. Beyond stronger, more muscular lines and a visible third-row seat, the photos showed a separate charging port on the car, indicating that it was a plug-in hybrid.
In the teaser images, we can only see the fender badge, sporting the “Inline 6” text, which we know refers to its new powertrain lineup. Europe gets a turbodiesel inline-six, but Americans should see the 3.0-liter inline-six and a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a four-cylinder engine.
As it did with the new CX-50, Mazda may move the CX-90 in a more upscale direction than the existing CX-9. The CX-50 got a rugged exterior treatment, but its cabin and finishes are top-notch, a good indication of how things might play out with the larger CX-90.
We don’t know pricing, release date, or configuration details yet, but Mazda has confirmed that it would debut in January 2023 before arriving later for the 2024 model year. The current CX-50 starts at around $1,000 more than the CX-5, so we can safely guess that the CX-90 will start in the high $30,000 or low $40,000 range.
