Just the other day, we reported on Mark Reuss's comments suggesting that a new car or crossover was coming and it would be based on the Chevrolet Corvette C8 platform but it wouldn't use the Corvette name.
Now, a new report suggests it's official.
Car and Driver uses an apparently well-placed source to claim that a four-door crossover and four-door coupe are their way, and both will be EVs. C/D's source claims these vehicles will not be copying the 'Vette's styling but will ride on the platform. It appears that mechanicals will include "battery packs with high energy density, superfast software, a patented cooling concept, staggered Lego-like topographic packaging, miniaturized componentry, ultra-efficient inverters, high-revving electric motors, an 800-volt electrical system that provides up to 350 kW of charging power, a two-speed transmission, brake-by-wire, multi-mode four-wheel steering, and torque vectoring."
Chevrolet, of course, was mum on the topic when I reached out: "Thanks for checking in. This is not official. Our statement in regards to Car and Driver’s article on the Chevrolet Corvette is: These reports are speculative. We have nothing to confirm regarding future Corvette plans."
I'm guessing, based on Reuss's comments, that C/D's source is solid, and what the venerable buff book is reporting is likely accurate, at least in the broad strokes, and Chevrolet is just not ready to announce it. We'll keep an eye out -- the Consumer Electronics Show is coming up soon and would be a good place for an announcement.
In the meantime, try to wrap your head around a four-door lifted sporting crossover or a four-door coupe, both using the Corvette platform but getting different names.
