Volvo has come up with some truly compelling EV designs, and that’s before we talk about anything from Polestar. The automaker’s upcoming EX90 blends the XC90’s clean, attractive shape with advanced safety and driver-assist technology. It’s become so popular with prospective buyers that Volvo had to stop taking orders to catch up.
The note came in a press release on the automaker's Q1 2023 performance. Citing the SUV’s “tremendous reception,” Volvo said that the EX90 has “surpassed the company’s boldest and most ambitious internal projections. The first scheduled production run has sold out, but Volvo noted it would be back open soon.
The EX90 will sell alongside the XC90, at least for a while, and the automaker is planning a new, lower-cost EV called the EX30. Set for a debut this June, the vehicle promises a decent range and a lower cost that Volvo hopes will attract younger buyers. The company’s U.S. EV lineup currently consists of the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge, both of which start in the mid-$50,000 range.
Volvo will build the EX90 at its facility in Charleston, SC, and Chengdu, China, and it’s expected to start production later this year. Though it shares basic styling elements with the gas or hybrid XC90, the EX90 gets a load of sensors and cameras that will enable hands-free driving and other advanced driver aids.
