Through much of the first half of this year, new vehicle sales were down. Used car sales took up some of the slack, but the market is now changing.
With the average transaction price for a new vehicle sitting adjacent to all-time highs and now used car prices rising to near record levels, something’s got to change. In spite of all this upward spiking, analysts and auto executives were predicting good things for the second half of the year.
Typically, when new car prices jump, buyers jump to used cars. But according to Cars.com, used car prices jumped 4.5 percent last month. Now the forecast by some experts is changing. Cox Automotive analysts are now predicting full-year sales for 2026 will come in at 15.8 million units, down from last year’s 16 million-plus.
So the question is: Are you in or are you out? And a follow up: New or used? Let us know what you’re thinking.
