Ford’s May Sales Numbers Land With a Thud

Most automakers reporting May sales had reason to celebrate, but Ford isn’t one of them, revealing its results were down 13.6 percent compared to year ago numbers.

The Michigan-based automaker saw is numbers fall in every category: trucks, cars, and SUVs, which endured the biggest decline of 20.9 percent. Trucks were down 8.4 percent and cars, better known as the Mustang, were down 1.8 percent.

Ford brand vehicles fell 13.3 percent and its Lincoln luxury unit dropped further: 20.5 percent. A scan of the company’s spreadsheet shows not everything was down. The full-size Bronco jumped 5.2 percent, and the Explorer was even better at 8.8 percent.

The Maverick also fared well, rising 10 percent year over year, but its larger siblings suffered in May. The king of the pickups, the F-Series, dropped 13.3 percent and the midsize Ranger was even worse, reporting a 23.3 percent slide. The biggest drops came from two of its electric vehicles: the Mustang Mach-E fell 44 percent while the F-150 Lightning tumbled 45 percent.

Even its hybrid results ran counter to the industry with a 15.7 percent drop.

The upside? Its year-to-date numbers are better than last month. Overall sales are down 11.2 percent with Maverick (11.7 percent), Ranger (1.3 percent), and F-Series (15.1 percent) all in the red. The F-Series numbers are understandable as the company is still trying to get the pickup’s production rate back to normal in the wake of two supplier fires.

The Explorer and Bronco are in the black as well as the Mustang, which is up 28.6 percent through the first five months of the year.

The American automaker’s numbers were the lowest of the company’s that report sales monthly with Toyota being next closest. It was down 0.6 percent while Kia, Hyundai, Subaru, Mazda, and Honda all were in the black in May.
